After four years of a dog-less White House, the Bidens are bringing two pooches with them.
In a historical inauguration which saw Kamala Harris sworn in as the nation’s first female vice president, and also the first Black person and the first person of South Asian descent elected to the vice presidency, there was canine history, too.
“Major,” the Bidens’ German Shepherd will become the first dog rescued from a shelter to live at the White House, according to USA Today.

Joe Biden's dog, Major, adopted from the Delaware Humane Society.
The Bidens officially adopted “Major” from the Delaware Humane Association in 2018 after fostering him, which allowed the dog to escape life-threatening toxic living conditions in his previous home.

The Bidens have another German Shepherd named “Champ” who will also make the move to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
On Sunday, both dogs were honored in a “Indoguration” ceremony, which was hosted by The Delaware Humane Association and Pumpkin Pet Insurance.
The dogs, however, did not attend the ceremony as they prepared for their move, USA Today reports.
Speaking at the ceremony, Andrew Hager, a historian in residence at The Presidential Pet Museum, said, “I think Major being the first shelter dog is also kind of reflective of Americans and our history as well. We are at this point where Americans are much more inclined to adopt a pet now than we’ve ever been, and the Bidens reflect that change,” USA Today writes.
The two German Shepherds were recently featured in a children’s book titled, “Champ and Major: First Dogs.
